Mohonk Consultations cofounded the nonprofit organic farm, Phillies Bridge Farm Project, a CSA (community-supported agriculture) in New Paltz and Gardiner, for the education of adults and local school children in sustainable agriculture.
Helen Vukasin, founder and then-chair of the board of Mohonk Consultations, approached the owners of the farm, Jim and Mary Ottaway, in 1984 to create a demonstration farm that would focus on organic techniques and community education. This became The Phillies Bridge Farm Project in 1999. In 2002 the Ottaways, who were deeply committed to the preservation of open space and agricultural sustainability, generously donated the farm and its historic buildings to the Project, which became a not-for-profit organization, and then one of the first preservation easements held by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust.
The Farm Project became independent of Mohonk Consultations in 2001. Phillies Bridge serves to educate both children and adults in workshops, summer camps, school programs, and internships, while collaborating with other local CSAs to raise consciousness about the value of agriculture, open space, and stewardship of the land for future generations.
