This forum built on the theme of our November 2017 conference, Nature Across Boundaries: Keeping Lands and Waters Connected. To reach successful conservation outcomes—especially when planning across boundaries—it is essential to form strong partnerships and have clear communication with peer organizations, municipalities, landowners, and other stakeholders. We learned from connectivity case studies from the Hudson Highlands and Rensselaer Plateau, heard about Governor Cuomo’s proposed Empire Forests for the Future Initiative, and explored different approaches to effectively engage stakeholders.
Speakers:
Laura Heady, Conservation and Land Use Program Coordinator, NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program and Cornell University (Read her introduction to the forum here)
Dr. William Schuster, Executive Director, Black Rock Forest Consortium (Presentation: Collaboration and Persistence in Preserving and Enhancing Connectivity)
Ed Goodell, Executive Director, New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (Presentation: Online Trail Corridor Conservation)
Jim Bonesteel, Executive Director, Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (Presentation: Growing Connected Resilient Communities)
Karen Strong, Principal, Strong Outcomes (Presentation: Productive Municipal Relationships)
